The unincorporated community is 10 miles outside of Birmingham’s limits in the northwest portion of Shelby County, defined by I-280 to the north, I-119 to the east and 17 to the west. Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama’s largest state park, comprises nearly 10,000 acres to the southwest of Meadowbrook. About 30 miles farther south sits Lake Lay. The man-made, recreational lake has a shoreline of about 289 miles, and offers plenty of fishing and boating opportunities.
Mountain biking is a popular pastime for area residents. The Red Trail, which is listed in the International Mountain Biking Association’s list of EPIC rides, is one of 50 miles of trails through Oak Mountain State Park. In addition to dozens of other outdoor activities, the park houses an amphitheater that hosts national artists. Golf is another major draw. The Greystone Golf & Country Club has two champion level courses. Eagle Point features an 18-hole, par 71 championship facility, and Inverness Country Club boasts a championship course, renovated by noted architect Bill Bergin.
