If you're looking for a taste of Los Angeles mixed with a bit of the mountains, try Glendale on for size. Its central location, phenomenal shopping and outdoor activities, plus thriving economy make Glendale one of the most popular cities in Los Angeles County, not to mention one of the largest. Its more than 200,000 residents enjoy neighboring cities Burbank, Pasadena and Van Nuys, plus easy access to multiple freeways and the beauty of Verdugo Mountains and Wildwood Canyon Park. It's a slice of the great outdoors in the heart of L.A.
With excellent public safety, a strong school system, convenient location and economic stability, it's no surprise that Glendale's property values are high, resulting in many white-collar, highly educated, affluent residents throughout the city. That isn't to say the Glendale crowd isn't artistic. In fact, it boasts a large number of artists and designers as well as young and diverse dwellers. It's also a hot spot for business, with Walt Disney Imagineering, DreamWorks, Nestle USA and other major corporations anchoring here.
The proximity to multiple parks, valleys and mountains make Glendale a fabulous escape in the heart of the city. Head north and you'll find the Deukmejian Wilderness Park; head northwest to reach both Wildwood Canyon Park and La Tuna Canyon Park; head southwest and you'll hit Griffith Park with some of the most popular hiking trails in the county. If you're looking for more urban surroundings, you're only 10 miles from downtown L.A., and even closer to West Hollywood. Though the city is somewhat walkable, your best bet for getting around is anything with wheels or rails. Fortunately, you can catch the Glendale Beeline bus system, Metrolink, Metro, Greyhound and Amtrak, plus Dial-A-Ride, the city's transportation service for those who are disabled or over 65 years old.
For shopping, the city is home to the fashionable Americana at Brand, as well as one of the largest malls in L.A., The Glendale Galleria. Be sure to visit Forest Lawn Memorial Park for panoramic views and a peaceful stroll along the grounds where Walt Disney, Jimmy Stewart and many other famous figures are buried. For even more entertainment, catch a show at the historic Alex Theatre or the Glendale Centre Theatre.
