About the building

6924 Carmichael was originally built in 1975 by a Japanese nisei family ("second generation"). This spacious 5-bedroom home features floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering an unparalleled view and privacy of the Cabin John woods behind. Visitors are welcomed into the traditional genkan entrance, guarded by a Japanese samurai. The living room features a beautiful silk quilted kimono hung on the wall. The dining room is furnished with a wall-length folding screen decorated with cranes. Additions and renovations in 2005 and 2006 included the master suite with Japanese ofuro sunken tub and private deck, as well as a new vaulted kitchen, family room, and conservatory. On the lower level one of the existing bedrooms was remodeled into a tatami room, and 2 additional bedrooms were added as well as an additional office. From the front of the house, a wooden gate invites visitors along a wooden elevated walkway over the gardens of moss and plantings, to a terrace with cascading waterfall and deep koi pond.
