Y or N: School Level School Primary School Pebbles Elementary School Middle School Carson Middle School High School North Allegheny Ihs High School North Allegheny Shs Link to North Park: A fantastic resource for area mountain bikers The Allegheny County Park System (website link) consists of almost 12,000 acres of land in nine regional parks within Allegheny County. These parks are located in various geographical directions within a 25 mile radius of downtown. This park system is an amazing resource for mountain bikers from the region, with excellent, well maintained, single and double track. The whole system contains about 176 miles of non-paved trails. We are very lucky to have such an excellent network of trails in such close proximity to the city. Blazing and Mapping Efforts Countless hours of volunteer work - painting blazes on trees - has resulted in a significant proportion of the trails being very well marked (blazed). This excellent work not only included the actual blazing of the trails but determining which trails would be blazed. A lot of thought and hard work went into this effort. Follow this link (article link) for a good article on the mapping and blazing of the trails at North Park. Allegheny GIS Department (website link) has done a fantastic job of making publically available free maps of the parks. These maps typically indicate the blazed and non-blazed trails and were developed using GIS (Geographical Information System) mapping with GPS (Global Positioning System) technology (maps link). Town of McCandless information: The Town of McCandless is located in the center of the "North Hills" of Allegheny County. The Town maintains a comfortable, country nature while continuing to grow. McCandless' 16.4 square miles is occupied by over 28,457 residents. Town of McCandless: Early History Learn how the Town of McCandless came to be the wonderful community it is today by reading about it's early settlers. Among those settlers include George Washington, Iroquois Indians and Wilson McCandless. Also, find out how Perry Highway got it's name! Pittsburgh Location & Demographics Strategically located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic states, Allegheny County is only a short flight or a day's drive from many of the world's busiest commercial centers, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, and Toronto, Canada. These lucrative markets encompass more than 50 percent of the populations of both the United States and Canada, and account for 53 percent of the American buying income. Utilizing a transportation system that takes advantage of all modes of travel including highways, waterways, rail lines and one of the nation's most modern aviation facilities, Allegheny County is uniquely positioned to deliver its world class high-tech, bio-medical, manufacturing and communication products to markets throughout the world. The landscape of Allegheny County can be characterized as rolling hills punctuated by several scenic river valleys that offer breathtaking vantage points to experience the splendor of all four seasons. Winter provides the perfect opportunities for skiers and sled riding as snow, while not in abundance, often blankets the area. Surrounded by many rural farming communities, the spring season is the time of rejuvenation highlighted in the rebirth of the many forests and greenways that frame the local highways and byways. The long days of summer afford the opportunity to work and yet still cut loose to enjoy the many recreational activities available to the local population. Fall is probably the most appreciated time of the year for many Allegheny County natives. The hills come alive with a kaleidoscope of red, yellow and orange hues that leave the observer warm inside to carry through the winter doldrums until the onset of spring. Average temperatures for our location range anywhere from 18 degree Fahrenheit lows in January to 83 degree Fahrenheit highs in July Mass Transit & Aviation The mass transit needs of county residents are served by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, the 14th largest public transportation system in the country. Port Authority has a fleet of 1,000 buses, 83 light rail vehicles and 75 mini-buses. It also operates the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines and sponsors ACCESS, the nation's largest paratransit program of its kind for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Port Authority provides fast and convenient service on three busways: the Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway transports riders between downtown and the eastern suburbs; the South Busway connects the South Hills and Station Square to downtown; and the West Busway links downtown to the Carnegie interchange of the Parkway West. With the busways, Port Authority offers a Park and Ride program, which has grown to 63 lots and more than 14,800 parking spaces. The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), opened in 1992 and situated on 12,900 acres 16 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh, is among the world's most modern airport terminal complexes. In 1998, more than 20.5 million travelers passed through PIT, which offers more than 600 daily non-stop flights to over 110 cities including non-stop international flights to several Canadian cities and to Paris and Frankfurt. School information- 2011-2012 District Report Card The No Child Left Behind Act and the Pennsylvania Accountability System mandate that school districts provide their communities with a Report Card of Student Achievement indicating student achievement as assessed by the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). The focus of the assessment is to determine the degree to which the students and school in the State of Pennsylvania are proficient in achieving the content contained in the Pennsylvania Academic Standards in the areas of mathematics, reading, and writing. Additionally, the PSSA provides information to teachers and schools to use as a guide for the redesign of curricula and instructional strategies to enable students to achieve the Pennsylvania Academic Standards. For this purpose, districts are asked to provide their communities with the following information: Mathematics and Reading performance of all students in grades 3 through 8 and 11. Performance in Science in grades 4, 8, and 11 are included as well. Mathematics and Reading performance of disaggregated groups with 10 or more students in grades 3 through 8 and 11. Two year Mathematics and Reading performance trends of all students in grades 3 through 8 and 11. Comparison of School Building, District and State Mathematics and Reading performance. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status of the District and School Buildings. PSSA participation rate for each School Building. Graduation rates for students in grades 9-12. Qualifications of District teaching staff. For the 2011-2012 school year, students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 in public schools throughout the state were required to take the PSSA. The state compares student performance data from the PSSA with its own established targets for proficiency. That information is combined with test participation, attendance, and graduation data to determine if schools have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). For the 2011-2012 school year, the performance of students in grades 3 8 and 11 was used to determine AYP. Student performance on the PSSA is reflected in four performance levels: Advanced (superior academic performance) Proficient (satisfactory academic performance) Basic (marginal academic performance) Below Basic (inadequate academic performance) The goal of NCLB is for every student to score at the Proficient level or above by the year 2014. Schools are required to advance toward this goal by meeting the gradually increasing AYP targets established for each interim year. For 2011, Pennsylvania has established the AYP targets for student performance as follows: Student Achievement o In Reading, the combined percentage of students performing at the Advanced and Proficient levels must be at least 81%. o In Mathematics, the combined percentage of students performing at the Advanced and Proficient levels must be at least 78%. o Achievement data must be analyzed in aggregate on a District basis and for each individual school. In addition, the state requires that the performance of students in twelve identified subgroups be analyzed. These subgroups include gender, race/ethnicity, IEP, English Language Learners, migrant status, and economically disadvantaged status. For the purpose of determining AYP compliance, the performance of any subgroup that includes more than 40 students is considered. To meet the requirements for Report Cards, the performance of any subgroup of more than 10 students is included. Participation Rate in Assessments: 95% of students must take the PSSA exam. Attendance Rate (K - grade 8): The student attendance rate for the year must meet or exceed 90%. Graduation Rate (Grades 9 12): The District must demonstrate that 85% or more of secondary students graduate from high school. To attain AYP, the criteria must be met. However, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has developed additional filters in determining AYP. The filters consider significant growth in student achievement and the possibility of sampling errors. They include the Safe Harbor Provision; the Confidence Interval; the PA Performance Index; Proxy; and Growth Model. Because we can link to the Pennsylvania Department of Education website, up to date information is provided. This information is also provided in an alternate format in the North Allegheny "Your Schools" Community Newsletter. This publication is available to each resident on the home page of the North Allegheny website entitled 'The NA Digital Magazine.'
