Gratiot woods is nestled in a revitalized neighborhood which boasts several new and rehabbed homes in the area. It is a non-profit, three story building with 61 apartments. Members have a voice in the management of their building and are encouraged to participate. The rent is subsidized, so the seniors pay roughly 30% of their gross monthly income. Each unit comes with a stove and refrigerator. All apartments have central air and heat, with individual controls. Gratiot Woods Co-op also boasts a large community room with kitchen facilities, their own library, a gift shop and a beautifully decorated first floor lounge. We also have community lounges with balconies on the second and third floors. There is an onsite computer center for resident use as well as free wireless internet access for all residents. Activities are planned by the residents and include crafts, luncheons, potlucks, bingo, movie nights, card nights and ice-cream socials. Floor, council and general membership meetings are held monthly and ensure a democratically-controlled co-op. Gratiot Woods is one of the best-served areas for bus transportation. There are lines on Gratiot, Warren, Cadillac, Mack, Harper and Conner to name just a few in the area. These lines, four of wich are within two to four blocks of the building, connect to virtually every route in the city of Detroit.
