About the building

THE SILVER FOREST - HISTORIC BRIDGER CANYON HOME $8,950/month | 7 Bedrooms | 6.5 Bathrooms | Fully Furnished | 5 Private Acres A rare opportunity to live in one of Bridger Canyon's most remarkable historic homes The Silver Forest, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a magnificent Western Rustic log home nestled among the pine and fir trees of Bridger Canyon, with spectacular views of the Bridger Mountains and Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Set on five wooded acres and completely screened from the road and neighboring homes, The Silver Forest offers exceptional privacy and seclusion yet is just 5 minutes from Bridger Bowl Ski Area and Crosscut Mountain Sports Center and approximately 20 minutes from downtown Bozeman. Fully furnished and extensively renovated and updated, this extraordinary three-level home combines nearly a century of Montana history and architectural character with the comforts of modern mountain living. Available October 15, 2026, for a minimum eight-month lease. THE HOME A winding driveway through the trees leads to this remarkable log home tucked into a timbered knoll, hidden from Bridger Canyon Road. The entry opens into a dramatic great room with soaring wood ceilings supported by massive decorative pine-log trusses, original log walls, and a central fieldstone fireplace. Expansive windows fill the room with natural light and capture magnificent views across the forest to the Bridger Mountains and Bridger Bowl. A large Samsung Frame TV that displays artwork when not in use is above the fireplace. One of the home's most distinctive architectural features is its three-story log turret. On the main level, the turret creates a beautiful, light-filled sunroom surrounded by windows and mountain views. It's a wonderful place to watch the sunrise with morning coffee, work remotely during the day, read in the afternoon, or enjoy an apres-ski drink while looking toward Bridger Bowl. The semi-formal dining room comfortably seats 10, while the recently renovated kitchen is fully equipped for everyday cooking and entertaining. SEVEN BEDROOMS & 6.5 BATHROOMS The bedrooms are spread across all three levels, providing an unusual degree of privacy and flexibility for family members and guests. Upper Turret: At the top of the home is one of its most memorable rooms a private turret bedroom with a queen bed and approximately 280-degree views of the surrounding forest, Bridger Mountains and Bridger Bowl. Main Floor: Three bedrooms are located on the main level, each with its own private bathroom and a California king bed. Lower Level: Three additional bedrooms are downstairs. The lower turret bedroom has a queen bed with private bathroom across the hall. It has a door to the meadow. The other two lower-level bedrooms are connecting rooms, with a California king bed in one and a double bed in the adjoining room an especially convenient arrangement for a family with children or visiting guests. These rooms share an attached bathroom.. MADE FOR MOUNTAIN LIVING The lower level is designed to make the transition from a day in the mountains easy. A comfortable family room with TV and game area provides a casual second gathering space and opens directly to a covered outdoor BBQ and parking area. Attached full bathroom. Dedicated shelving provides plenty of storage for skis, boots, helmets, jackets, fishing gear, hiking equipment and other outdoor gear. There is also a private two-person whirlpool spa room, along with a separate exercise and meditation room with stationary bike and space for yoga or Pilates. A large utility room includes a washer and dryer, second refrigerator, and generous additional storage. The property provides covered parking for two vehicles, along with extensive additional parking for cars, trucks, boats, snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles. EXCEPTIONAL PRIVACY The Silver Forest offers something increasingly difficult to find this close to Bozeman and Bridger Bowl: genuine privacy. The home sits on five wooded acres surrounded by mature pine and fir trees and is completely screened from the road and neighboring residences. From inside the home, the dominant views are of forest, mountains and Bridger Bowl. The Silver Forest has been in the same ownership for 50 years and is a much-loved private home, not simply a rental property. The property is professionally maintained with an emphasis on tenant privacy, discretion and quiet enjoyment of the home. Routine services, including the monthly professional cleaning, are coordinated in advance and scheduled with the tenant. FOUR SEASONS IN BRIDGER CANYON With Bridger Bowl just five minutes away, skiing and snowboarding can become part of everyday life rather than a weekend excursion. Nearby Crosscut Mountain Sports Center offers Nordic skiing and year-round outdoor recreation, including nationally known mountain biking. Big Sky Ski Area is an hour away. As the snow melts, Bridger Canyon opens up to hiking, mountain biking, trail running, wildlife viewing and exploring the surrounding mountains. Southwest Montana is renowned for its fly-fishing and hunting opportunities, making The Silver Forest an exceptional home base for enjoying Montana's outdoor life. Rivers, streams, mountain trails and vast public lands are all within easy reach. Whether the day is spent skiing fresh snow at Bridger Bowl, Nordic skiing at Crosscut, hiking or biking in the mountains, fly-fishing one of southwest Montana's legendary rivers, or heading out for a day of hunting, The Silver Forest provides a private and comfortable place to come home to. A PIECE OF MONTANA HISTORY The Silver Forest's history is as distinctive as its architecture. Indianapolis businessman Arthur L. McKinney purchased the property in 1934 with an ambitious vision of creating a mountain retreat that would include a boys' camp, theater colony and school for the arts. The project employed 75 men who worked with horse teams at what was then a remote, non-mechanized building site. By spring 1935, the property included the neighboring Flaming Arrow Lodge, ten cabins, an extraordinary 1,000-seat Silver Forest Theatre, and McKinney's private log residence the home now known as The Silver Forest. McKinney died unexpectedly in May 1935 at just 49 years old, before his vision could be fully realized. His private residence remained unfinished for years and was ultimately completed by later owners. Today, The Silver Forest is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as an exceptional example of Western Rustic architecture. Its massive log walls, fieldstone fireplace and chimney, decorative log trusses, rustic staircase and distinctive three-story turret preserve the character and craftsmanship of another era. The home later operated as The Silver Forest Inn, taking its name from McKinney's long-dismantled theater. The property has been in the current ownership for 50 years and is once again a private residence, extensively renovated and thoughtfully updated while preserving its historic character.
