The house is sited in a wood-area on Komusin Lane, which also has three other houses rented by the Cranberry Isles Realty Trust (CIRT). CIRT is a non-profit organization formed about 30 years ago to provide quality affordable homes for working families who want to live on Great Cranberry Island and Little Cranberry Island (known as Islesford). Our goal is to help sustain the great year-round community of about 65-70 persons on Great Cranberry Island and another 70-80 year-round people on Islesford. In all, CIRT provides five year-round rental homes on each of the islands, and has also assisted three families to purchase their own homes. CIRT is governed by a board of 15 year-round islanders and summer residents. The organization enjoys wide and deep support in the community.
For such a small island, Great Cranberry has many enriching amenities and community organizations including a K-8 school, library, a community center, well-stocked general store, fire house, transfer station, post office, town dock, access to high speed Internet, historical society and cultural center, a gas station, a fitness center and a church. There are two boat yards on the island. There are year-round multiple ferries a day to the islands. The views on the islands are exceptionally beautiful - they overlook the mountains of Acadia National Park and other islands, as well as the open Atlantic. There is a sailing school on Islesford as well as a boat building school - both for children to learn the ways of traditional island living.
In the summer the population of Great Cranberry increases by a couple hundred and there are many community activities throughout the season. Life on the islands can be challenging during the long Maine winters - but the rewards are in the community life and connections. Those from away who want to move here need to be people who really want to active in the community life of the island and its organizations and also have their own hobbies and interests.
The islands are an incredible place for children to grow up - as they have been since they were settled by fishermen and farmers in the 1760s. The education in the schools on the islands focuses on individual students working and playing creatively together and learning through the real, hand's-on world of island life.
The mainland communities of Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor are only about a 25 minute boat ride away. There are stores, restaurants and other attractions very handy, with Ellsworth and its many stores and restaurants only a 20 minute drive away from the harbors.
