Building History
The Granite Building was constructed in 1822 by Kellogg and Sabin. Its granite facade was originally freestanding and, according to Syracuse Landmarks by Evamaria Hardin, it is "the oldest downtown structure."
Its history closely parallels the growth of the city of Syracuse. Originally a general store, the building may have also housed a salt inspector, as a salt scale and counterweight were later discovered on-site by owner Robert Koolakian.
In the 1860s, renowned local architect Archimedes Russell maintained his architectural office on the third floor.
Most notably, in the 1840s, early photography pioneer John M. Clark established a daguerreotype studio on the fourth floor one of the oldest portrait studios in the country at the time. According to Cleota Reed's 1985 index of Syracuse photographers (1841 1900), approximately half of the city's early photographers practiced in the Granite Building.
