Building History
The Pleasant Main apartments occupy a building that was built in the 1850's as two separate buildings.
The southern building served for 64 years (1856-1920) as one of several bakeries operating along Main Street. The big brick oven in the basement was carefully tended by members of the Schmidt and Hueneke families over this period. The northern building served the neighborhood as a hardware store for almost 100 years (1858-1955). It was known as Glaescher & Co. Cabinet Builders' Hardware & Mechanics Tools from 1858-1889 and as Kuhlmann Hardware Co. from 1889-1955.
The building located directly behind the hardware store on Woodward Street (formerly Franklin Street) was the warehouse for the hardware store. Today, residents enjoy a shared courtyard between the two buildings.
The buildings were combined around 1956 when Goldman's, Inc., took possession and operated a clothing store from both buildings between 1956 and 1971.
The building experienced periods of vacancy until 1988 when it was renovated as office space for Gray & Pape, Inc., a national historic preservation and cultural heritage consulting firm. In 2025, the offices were converted back to residential apartments.
Historical elements reflecting the buildings evolving residential and commercial uses are incorporated into each apartment's design.
