Some History - Ocean Park Heights was the official name of Mar Vista from 1904 until 1924, when it was then rebranded by the local Chamber of Commerce. During this time, the community was shifting from farming to residential, largely supported by the Venice Short Line trolley. Due to its proximity to the ocean and unique hill formations, the area has long been described as having a more "equable" (balanced) climate than Los Angeles, with a "soft and balmy zephyr" from the Pacific Ocean "the perfect Southern California beach climate that is never hot and always delightfully cool at night". Summing it up in 1921, leading American climatologist Robert DeC. Ward (of no less than Harvard University!) pronounced Mar Vista's hilly climate "salubrious" (google it!). Ward referenced Mark Twain's contemporary and buddy Charles Dudley Warner who added, "Here is our Mediterranean. Here is our Italy." And here Ward added "countless millions in the years to come will seek, and will find, health and strength and a wonderful exhilaration in the joy of living."
