Urban Commuting: Longest Commutes by Metropolitan

Curious about how your daily commute compares to other urbanites’? So were we. So we delved into the Census’ 5-year ACS data to show you how and by what mode of transport folks in urban metros are getting to work.

We’ll be pitting metro against metro in a weekly five-part urban commuting series to see which have the highest percent of commuters taking public transit, driving, biking and walking.

Long commutes can be killer, literally. Studies have shown that long commutes can cause stress, depression and insomnia. But sometimes, long commute times are unavoidable, especially for those living in congested urban areas.

HotPads kicks off its Urban Commuting Series by looking at the top 23 metropolitan areas in order of longest commute times.

Click here to view the nationwide interactive map showing how much time commuters spend getting to work in your zip code (Brown = the most hair-pulling commutes. Dark blue = easy breezy commutes). And, don’t forget to come back next week to see which metro areas have the highest percentage of commuters using public transit .

*Commute times and percentages account for a city’s entire metro area. Numbers shown reflect the amount of time in minutes it takes commuters to get from home to work, one way.
