Steampunk refers to a style of design reminiscent of the industrial revolution. Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic quasi-Victorian alternate history setting.
This style of design is best described as 19th century’s British Victorian era or American Wild West meets Science Fiction.
Steampunk is characterized by the use of steamer trunks, gears, leather, pipes, metal, exposed wiring and edison bulbs. The color scheme is subdued with shades of brown, black, gray and beige.Modern Steampunk Bathroom | Photo Credit: Andre Rothblatt Architecture
Steampunk in Films
Filmmakers have used Steampunk in set designs since 1954. Disney’s 200,000 Leagues Under The Sea gave us our first glance into this style of design.
You have seen this design style in more recent films such as: Wild Wild West, Van Helsing, Hellboy, Sherlock Holmes and The Time Machine.
