10 Best Neighborhood Series: #2 La Alma/Lincoln Park

Editors Note: America is filled with great places. The eclectic pulse of Manhattan’s streets or Lake Tahoe’s white sandy shores may come to mind. But great places, neighborhoods and streets can be found hiding in plain sight in the cities in which we live and work.

The American Association of Planning (APA) has unveiled its list of Best Neighborhoods for 2014. HotPads will feature each of the top 10 neighborhoods. Stay tuned and find out if your neighborhood made the list.

#2 La Alma/Lincoln Park, Denver, Colorado

Coming in second place on the APA’s 2014 Best Neighborhoods list is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Denver. La Alma/Lincoln Park has roots back to 1850 and many of the original homes from the early 1900s still stand.

Today, about 7,000 residents live in the neighborhood. Both locals and visitors know La Alma/Lincoln Park for its thriving Santa Fe Arts District, which includes 60 galleries, restaurants and shops. A First Friday Art Walk takes place along Santa Fe Drive each month as well as a more intimate “Preview Night” held on the third Friday of each month.

Along with having a bevy of galleries and museums, the neighborhood will also be home to the Colorado Ballet Company’s new 30,000 square-foot building on Santa Fe Drive.

New, affordable homes are also in the works through the South Lincoln Park Homes project. Managed by the Denver Housing Authority, the project will include 270 public housing units across 15 acres. The redevelopment will be centered around cultural diversity and environmental and sustainable goals.
