What You Need To Set Up Internet In Your Apartment

I'll admit it: I am one of those people that doesn't get South Park. I try to watch it, I really do, I just don't get it. But there was one episode that I thought I was going to die laughing when I saw it: when the internet went down. For those who are unfamiliar, basically, the internet went down and everyone went on a long journey west because "they heard there was internet there." All life stopped, television stations went blank, even the news stopped because they had used the internet to find the news. What I'm trying to say is that when I move into a new apartment without internet, I feel lost, helpless, and so alone.

So, before the move, print out this article and take it with you to ensure that your internet is up and running in a no time.

First, you are going to need a service provider. Some apartment buildings don't give you an option and have contracts with one service provider. It can be frustrating, but this is part of living in an apartment. For apartments that do give you the option, it's smart to do a little research and also look into current promotions?sometimes you can get some great deals, and if you are only looking to be in the apartment for a year, you can possibly get a special 6-12 month rate. Ask management how the internet and cable work in your apartment and ask other residences who they use and if they are happy with them.

If you want to use wifi instead of ethernet, you are going to need a router, which you often have to buy separately from your service provider (though they may rent.) Many service providers offer a free cable modem to rent, but also have an installation fee. Instead of paying this installation fee (which can be around $50), it makes sense to just buy your own modem for around the same price. If you don't need any special wire accommodations in your apartment, it's as simple as plugging the modem into the wall and attaching a few wires.
