Imperial on Peachtree

The historic Imperial Hotel was and remains PRI's most visible and acclaimed project. Located at the prominent "gateway" to downtown on Peachtree Street, it was originally constructed in 1910, but by the 1960's had fallen into extreme disrepair and disrepute. In 1991, homeless individuals and advocates staged a take-over of the building. This event involving the vacant Imperial became a front-page news feud with City Hall. PRI returned to the Imperial in 1995 with a plan for its extensive redevelopment, a part of the city-wide preparations for the 1996 Olympic Games. Because of the Imperial's size and historic character, the cost was considerable, necessitating multiple layers of federal, state and local government financing, together with the syndication of both low-income and historic ta ...(show more) x credits, all on top of a bank loan. In the end, all levels of government and local banks helped to pull together the necessary financing. Now an award-winning "grand dame" with her luster restored, the Imperial today is Atlanta's finest example of supportive housing, being both a good neighbor and a good home to over 120 individuals, many of whom would be on the streets were it not for the Imperial's affordable rents and extensive supportive services.
