Los Angeles is the 2nd most-populated city in the United States and the largest city in California.
At it's tallest spread (north-to-south), Los Angeles stretches 44 miles and at its widest (east-to-west) for 29 miles. The greater Los Angeles metropolitan area is said to consist of an estimated 17.7 million people.
Founded in 1781 by Felipe de Neve, Los Angeles was first a territory of Spain before being acquired by Mexico. California (and thus Los Angeles) then became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War in 1848.
