Frank J McCain who built the first Ferris Wheel at the World's Fair in Chicago bought the property in 1909 and lived there for many years. The Mercer Courthouse burned down in 1908 and Frank J McCain was involved in rebuilding the new courthouse. He brought some key unique pieces to the building such as the steps from the original courthouse built in 1844. He also incorporated the volt from the smokehouse to use as the door. During the Civil War slaves came through the property as they found papers about the underground railroad even the American gangster John Dillinger walked through the doors, known for his robberies of banks and police stations. Samuel Clendenin bought the 287 acre property with a deed he received rom the government in 1832 after the Revolutionary War. He built House of the Hill and eventually sold it to Bill McCane who made it an affluent destination with horses and was known to be the "mansion in the country". A family of ten lived in the House on the Hill for many years before Rick Kerins purchased the farmhouse in 1964. He spent years renovating the property into a five unit apartment building. Rick and his wife Paula have been managing the rental property since 1985.
