Forty Minutes from the Sixth Largest City in America: Historic Philadelphia, home of The Declaration of Independence This Very Quakerly Area was founded as "The Holy Experiment" by William Penn c.1683 & The Lenni-Lenape People
The House was built in 1750; Its Rebuild in 1995 makes it a "New Old House' as it has been re-designed to have 1990s conveniences and many large rooms & storage areas amidst the cozy nooks.
I discovered this property in 1993 as a stark, uninhabitable burned-out shell of bare walls after a search of 8 years. The original building has been completely restored and updated with Authentic Antique Materials and Entirely New Internal Systems. There are 2 Additions to the Original 1750s Stone House: An Original 1741 PA German Log Building and a Completely "New" Addition that houses many large spaces and modern conveniences. The "New to Look Old" Addition was created entirely with Historic Building Materials and Architectural Antiques. There is inspiring Historic Ambience throughout.
The Re-Build took three years before any habitation was possible.
The house is secluded and the atmosphere has a decidedly historic feel with modern creature comforts. The large covered back porch looks out on a stream valley and wooded hillside and laptops often migrate there companionably and also linger at the Extensive Kitchen Counter Area. There is a spring-fed stream in the valley that attracts wildlife. The porch is comfy and large and is great for deer spotting, nighttime owl sounds and the occasional fleeting sight of the fox. The house and grounds are secluded and parking is available right in front of the house. On a clear night, stars are visible and at night, sometimes the owls hoot and the fox calls.
(I searched for this property for 8 years and re-created it for an additional 3 years )
I've been the happy on-site Manager of Congregate Haven since 2011. There are 6 unique, large Private Bedrooms, each with its own historic character. Each private room has a desk area. The shared "Common Areas" (1741, 1751 & 1995) are Quite Large with Tall Ceilings. There are lots of private spaces; both the Great Rooms and the charming historic original spaces can host either commonality or privacy. There are 6 fireplaces, 4 antique staircases, very tall ceilings, and lots of welcome to be shared.
The Kitchen is very, very large, with a 6 burner stove and room for 7 stools at the full surround kitchen counter, with plenty of room for folks to eat, camp with a lap top or just share the news of the day.
The house is extremely spacious (nearly 5,000 sq. ft) with lots of variety in congregate living areas for either privacy and gathering, or alone time, depending on your mood of the moment. Many of the shared common areas are either extremely spacious or intimate and iconic. Each individual Private Room is lovingly created with historic inspiration and creature comforts and privacy at the top of both mind and heart.
The Congregate Haven opportunity often creates its own unique personal growth experience. Having an experienced on-site Leader/Manger helps to keep the harmony consistent and humming along gracefully and effortlessly. All of the Spaces are intentionally and generously shared with emotional intelligence, discretion, & a respect for shared tidiness and personal boundaries. "Having Shared Goals and Expectations" from the very beginning helps in understanding how Congregate Living Really Works and how easy it really is! I'm always so amazed at how simple, streamlined, and stress-free it all can be!
The dominant experience of being here is one of Tranquility, Peacefulness and Quiet. Folks in transition who initially intend to stay a short time for good reasons, are often contentedly here 2-5 years later. I know It may sound like a potential "Crowd Scene', but everyone inevitably asks, "Where IS Everybody?" Sometimes it can even seem "too quiet".
Meanwhile, the Historic Ambience can be inspiring and uplifting.
The Manager has separate quarters/facilities and is almost always on-site. I love it here! Congregate Living has always been a positive personal growth experience for me, since I was a young child and many times throughout my life. There are many full scope opportunities to learn and grow and be happy. I'll be glad to send more pics and an information portrait of what it can be like to be here. One thing that really makes me personally happy is when I observe moments that Congregate Haven is a positive life experience for someone
