My new landlord wants me to send him $500 security deposit Western Union. We've communicated by email only. He'll send me the rental key and rental packet when he get's the money. Is this typical? ...

Dont do it, its a scam. If you cannot get someone to physically open the door to the place you want to rent, and they want money wired to them you are going to wind up $500 poorer and nothing to show for it. Let me guess, Craigslist?
