Is living in the SW Waterfront (Washington, DC) safe?

I've never been there, but my son and his girlfriend are looking to rent a place there. Is it safe? I remember it being a bit shady a few years back, but have heard that it is really up and coming. Which neighborhood is it like now? Logan Circle? Cap Hill? Shaw? Anacostia?

Thanks for your help! Just trying to get a feel for it

I've lived in SW quite a while - parts have been dicey, but fewer now. Chances are, anything you're looking at, such as near the Waterfront Metro station, is fine.

About midway between Waterfront and Ballpark Metro stations, in the 100-200 blocks of M, N, O, or P streets, or the 1200 and higher of 1st, 2nd or 3rd streets may be the only ones to ask much about.

I think G and H streets in those blocks have also improved quite a bit; the rest have not been much of a problem for a while. There may be a little question between 1st and 3rd between I and L, but I don't think there's much there. A police station was recently moved to the adjacent school property.

Despite the historic reputation, I've found the SW waterfront a nice neighborhood. It's also improving significantly, with the new grocery store, pharmacy, restaurant and more.

Friends of mine on Capital Hill have put up with much more street crime than I've heard of or experienced in SW.

There will also be major renovations in SW in the next few years - the remainder of the Waterfront Station's build-out, renovation/rebuilding of 2 nearby church sites, and of course the waterfront itself. Older buildings on the waterfront are being taken down for reconstruction, but the dynamic fish markets will remain. Interim tenants there include the Wharf (free live music, food trucks and yoga classes) and the tennis stadium. There's ongoing planning for permanent use.

Plus, the Titanic Memorial statue! And, it is a great commute, both to downtown and most everywhere else, especially outside of rush hour.

I have a friend that lives in the SW Waterfront in DC. I have never felt unsafe there. Its not the most convenient neighborhood in DC because it is kind of secluded from the rest of the city. But then again, if you have a job with the federal government, its a great commute.
