How far out do homes get listed for?

My husband is PCSing, in March (Today is 17May). We are going to lease our house, and rent a place at our new location. How soon should I start looking? How far out do homes get listed for? Everything thats listed now, will be rented by then. Nothing I've seen has any farther than a Sept. availability date. I need to have some possibilities lined up, as soon as possible for a move in date of 01March.

Hello Azizi,

It might be pretty hard to find a place this far in advance. Generally, we suggest that you start figuring out the general areas you want to live in 90 days before, and then start inquiring on places 60 days before. THis is because most property management companies only require tenants to give 30-60 notice as to whether they will be renewing their lease.

There are some options though. If you are going to be looking in larger apartment complexes, they often have year round vacancies and might be able to put you at the top of their list for March. It's going to be harder with townhouses and single family homes, though, as the property managers will not know whether they are going to re-sign or not.

Good luck!
