What can be advertised as a "bedroom"? Is there some standard definition?
I'm so sick of seeing listings that say 4 bedrooms and then when I read the descriptions it says "4th bedroom converted into study/office/playroom/den" etc. And then when I tour the house, that 4th bedroom has built in shelving or media stands and no closet or any real way for it to be a "bedroom" without some costly renovations?
Are realtorsallowed to do this? I feel like it's false advertising! IT's really frustrating to find a house that I like that will be suitable for my wife and 3 children, only to find that it's not!
For a realtor to list a room as a bedroom the room must have a closet and window. Are you working with a realtor? If so make sure you're working with a professional who understands your needs.
Art, that's a good question. I've had this experience looking at rentals too where it is advertised as a 3 bedroom, but one of the bedrooms could hardly be considered a "bedroom." It's so frustrating when you think you found the perfect place, but it can't even sleep everyone! Hopefully, someone will chime in for the home buyers AND renters!
In Gulf County Fl., per the planning, building and code Dept. You only need a door and window for a room to called a bedroom. No closet needed. Coming from Denver Colorado were you must have the door, window and closet, I felt cheated as well.
You guys just dont get ManhattanReal Estate. People list 3bed as 4beds because they usually have a 3bed budget and want a 4th bedroom. Thus people list 3bed convertible 4's. Some place you can construct a 4th bed room and not have it take away from other space, some not. If you want a true 4 bed be prepared to spend hundreds if not, thousands more. You cannot comepare real estate from any other area to Manhattan. Its a market and world of its own.
A bedroom should have a closet, a window and a bathroom within easy access. Realtors should not deceive the buyer or tenant as this only causes a waiste of time and disbelief in the realtor. I agree with you it's just false advertising. You should clarify this with your Realtor.
