Living in Baltimore + working in Washington, DC...

I just got transfered to the Baltimore region from the Washington, DC/Nova region at my company. My girlfriend, whom I live with, still works in Washington, DC.

We are looking for a new place and want to live in either Washington, DC or Baltimore (don't want to move to the suburbs) but what I want to know is how bad is the commute from Baltimore to Washington, DC? Right now, we are leaning towards buying our first place in baltimroe because housing is so much more affordable in Bmore than DC.

If you had to choose between renting in Washington (and commuting to Baltimore) or buying in Baltimore (and commuting to DC), whcih would you pick?

I live outside DC and work in Baltimore. The commute is a little less then an hour on a good day, but I'm going against traffic (most people are trying to get into DC in the morning, so they have the worse commute).

We decided to buy in Baltimore and found a great three story townhouse for an incredible price. Brick, hardwood floors, awesome patio, parking, the works. It's finally coming together (thanks exclusively to my girlfriend's efforts). She says the commute isn't terrible, though on certain days, it can be well well over an hour. She's up for a job here in Baltimore right now, so it looks like we made the right decision. Thanks all for your feedback!

Which city do you like better?

If it were me, I'd choose based on that rather than living in a house you own vs. rent.

Personally, I really like Baltimore and think it has a lot to offer and it is a lot cheaper in just about every way. Would I necessarily want to buy a house and live there for the next 5 years... I don't know. But that's just me, you and your girlfriend have to answer that question for yourselves.

I was living in Baltimore and working in Bethesda, MD for about 6 months before I decided to pick up and move to DC. It honestly depends on how patient you are with bumper to bumper traffic and unfortunately, I am not!

I did have to leave my condo behind in Baltimore, so if you are looking for a place to rent or know of someone in need of a 2br condo, please let me know! www.beaconcondo412.com

Thanks and Good Luck!

I have a friend of mine who literally had to make the same decision a few months back, but reversed.

He and his girlfriend decided to buy a townhouse in Baltimore that is awesome and was really really cheap and he commutes to DC every day.

He says it's not too bad of a commute, obviously it's not as convenient as if he still lived in DC or anything, but they just got so much house for their money that it was hard to turn down.

You have to see whether you like baltimore or not too, though. There are some really great parts and some really not great parts about baltimore
