Is the mission area of SF safe at night?

I've heard the mission area in SF can get kinda scary at night, is this still the case, or is it much safer these days?

It really depends on where you are in the mission... and the closer you are to Market Street the better. Near Mission Dolores Park is good and down mission to about 21st... 24th and mission can get intimidating for some... downtown... mission street between 5th and 9th can look a little dicey at night, I never had any problems... but I'm a guy... just realize that this is an urban area and you have to keep your wits about you, and pay attention to who is around you.

It's a city, but the area has changed a lot in the past few years. I have a girl friend who lives by herself at 24th and Capp (like a block from the bart)- visiting her or leaving her place late at night isn't always awesome, but you just have to be smart

NO. It is NOT safe at night, especially if you're a male & appear to be hispanic.

It's the mission, of course it's not safe, thats what makes it expensive. Hipsters love to live in areas like that, so mission and tenderloin are now $$$$
