No, it's not, but there are pockets of bad areas just like any city. Plus, it's a really short commute to downtown, so you are going to have a lot of different types of people living in a small area. It's got some really nice spots too though. Anything near Smyrna-Vinings is a good area, anything near the Galleria or Atlanta Road. Downtown Smyrna is a nice area. Also, out towards Austell. Check out crime maps online or http://www.familywatchdog.us for more info on a particular area. Overall, it's totally not the ghetto though. You must've visited a bad part. There are a lot of nice parks, recreation, shopping, and cultural areas of Smyrna that are safe and a lot of fun.

Thanks for the info - I am considering moving to cut my commute to work in Midtown and Smyrna/Vinings is very convenient. I also was a little apprehensive when I did periodic drive-thru - street by street and some seemed nice and others not so nice.

You're best bet, if you don't want the 'hood', would be Vinings. A little pricey. But the area is much quieter & seemingly more laid back in my opinion. Just as close to the highways, Cumberland Mall & Atlanta as Smyrna.
