That's so exciting that you're moving to Boston! I currently live in New York but definitely still consider myself a Boston girl. The easiest way to get a feel for different neighborhoods and find one that matches your lifestyle, tastes, and budget is to go Nabewise.com. Nabewise actually profiles different areas, or "nabes" in major cities and ranks them based on affordability, style, dining options, safety, etc. I know for a fact they're launching the Boston edition within the week, so definitely check it out before you come over from Ireland! And best of luck!

the allston/brighton area (it's part of the city of boston, but not downtown) is where a lot of college students and recent grads live. there are a ton of night clubs and restaurants, plus some shops. the apartments are generally more reasonably priced than other areas. it's not "downtown" in boston, but you can take the T or the bus in less than a half an hour to be in the middle of the city if you want.

You're moving to the right city! There tons of neighborhoods in Boston and nearby that will fit your needs. For cheaper digs just outside, try Medford, Somerville; in-town it's Charlsetown or "Southie". But, in fact, in a good portion of Boston you're going to be near action, pubs and Irish (or those who'd like to be). Have fun!

East Boston is a really cool up and coming spot. Only one stop on the train from all the action downtown, and really nice units at half the rents of other areas. Be sure to check it out. And, Welcome to Boston!
