What do the different colors mean in for sale search? I'm seeing red, brownish, purple, and one yellow (which I assume is a promoted listing)

Red- all for sale properties
Purple- these are foreclosure listings. If you do not want to see foreclosures, you can uncheck the box next to them in the top tool bar
Yellow- the large yellow icon in the for sale search is a Featured Listing that matches your criteria. When you are in the rental or buy vs. rent portal, the yellow icons are rental listings
Brownish- I believe these are the greyed out listings that you have already viewed (we change the color so you can distinguish between listings you have seen and listings you have not)
