Jersey City, NJ location - I'm a 28 yr old female looking for a place in JC b/c I'll be going to graduate school in the area. I was offerred, what I believe, is an EXTREMELY good deal for one of ...

the studio/1BR units within the 77 Hudson complex and really feel like I should take it... but was then just told by friends who used to work in the same area or lived close by (more toward Grove/Montgomery St) that it's pretty desolate on the weekends with little to do and parking is atrocious... I'm going to be pretty focused on school, but am still seeking a social life, yknow? So I was just wondering if this was the general consensus among everyone who is familiar with the area, since I'm from Philadelphia and have no clue.... ?

Thanks!!!

so, parking in area does stink and social life is non existant. you'd probably like old downtown better (jersey/newark ave area). safe, quiet at night and close to path, a few cool bars, hamilton park, etc. a friend of mine is renting his apt near there. i don't have a car but he does and has never had parking issues. the alternate parking does suck though b/c jcpd are parking nazis. i think he is asking like 1650 for a 1 bdrm, w/ storage and small back yard. but i know there is a lot of rentals in area. dont settle and i'd stay away from new downtown. besides, dining in new downtown is still disappointing. good places to eat and hang are in old downtown, off of grove street. good luck and if your interested in getting in touch with my friend, just send me an email and i can set you two up. take care. - christine

Check out Downtown Newark on Mulberry Street or Market Street. Parking sucks on weekdays, but there are lots of garages and weekend parking is better. The area has little social activity (apart from the events at Prudential Center and Dino BBQ) but Ironbound is close by and has some action. The commute to NYC is also fantastic, with NJT and Path available on all days.
