what is a nice, safe area to rent a house or large apartment in the Richmond VA area?
we are being transferred there and want to rent before buying

we are interested in either a large apartment or a single family home that will accept one small indoor dog
we need at least 3 bedrooms & two baths
one grown child will be living with us while attending college

I live in the single family home right next door to this property and I can attest that it is a safe neighborhood, I have lived there ten years. Nearby Forest Hill Rd can get a little rowdy, especially further into the city, but that area is quasi-suburban. I walked my dog through that subdivision just last night at 9pm and it was quiet as could be.

You can get more safe than the West End, Cary St., Glen Allen, around U of R, and around the VCU area.

Hey Dianne!
Richmond is funny, being a small city, a 'safe' area can be right next to a less-safe area very easily. I'm 30 & from the 'safe' suburbs of NJ, & I'd live/raise a family in the neighborhood & house I have posted here on hotpads. (I'm only looking to rent it out bc I'm leaving town due to work arrangements.) It's extremely conventient & the neighborhood is quiet. http://hotpads.com/listing/399768

highland springs, mechanicsville and sandston are nice area's i would stick to East and West Richmond.

If buying is an option, you can own this for less than rent around here. 1450 sq. ft. two story less than 10 years old. Two large bedrooms up with full bath. One bedroom down with full bath. Hard wood floors everywhere. Within 2 miles of either, VCU or MCV campus. Check it out 1110 Perry Street $142,500. In MLS.
