Finding an apartment in a decent, safe neighborhood using a housing choice voucher. It's for a one bedroom.

I'm a 61 year old responsible adult on Social Security Disability. I recently received a housing choice voucher for a one bedroom apartment costing up to $1007.00 per month with an allowance for utilities.

The PHA (Philadelphia Housing Authority) isn't much help in providing accurate information. I was initially told I must rent an apartment in Philadelphia for two years, then the voucher was transferable to any county or state.

Another employee told me the voucher is transferable right now. That the PHA would pay my rent until I was accepted into another county or states program.

I'm hoping someone here can help me with some answers. If transferable, I'd like to move to Bucks County PA.

However, trying to find a decent, safe, quiet one bedroom apartment that accepts vouchers has proven nearly impossible thus far. If anyone has personal experience, or ideas that might assist me please feel free to answer any or all of my questions.

I also have two indoor house cats. From rentals I've seen, having the cats isn't the issue. It's that most places don't accept housing choice vouchers. With good reason I suspect.

Should I try and deal with realty agencies? The newspapers, craigslist etc, haven't been much help so far.

Thank everyone in advance for your time on my behalf.

You can transfer after 1 year and I would strongly advise it. I have had a voucher since 99'. I transferred to Va in 07'. I just transferred to Philadelphia last month and the horrible neighborhoods I was shown but there is hope and there are some good one to be viewed but you must be diligent and have faith. If I can help you in any way feel free to call me Angel (917}474-9720

Best bet is to go in the yellow pages under real estate and you have to continue to call the companies in your area of living till you find someone to assist you. It only took me two phone calls and in the middle of working with one realtor located in newtown pennsylvania.
