Navigating Chicago- how easy is it to drive downtown or take the L to work?
Follow up question- I'm moving from Richmond to Chicago. I have a job downtown near "the Loop"... should I live downtown or is taking the L pretty easy? I could also bring my car, but I was thinking it would be impossible to get around Chicago during rush hour. Basically just trying to figure out what neighborhoods I should narrow my search to. Thanks!
Driving on the expressways from the suburbs is mostly congested 45-1 1/2 each way depending on route and distance. Commuter and local public transportation (buses and trains) are better than average. The L is easy if you live in the city. They pretty much cover all the loop. Go to CTA or RTA Metra Website for chicago and you can view the system maps to various neighborhoods and suburgs.
The L is cake. You will have no problem navigating either...it's a grid system. Really easy to figure out once you know where some key points are in the city. For example, 0 West/0 South, 1600 North/1600 West, etc.
