How do I recover money paid for rent to someone who misrepresented himself as property owner?

I rented an apartment in Garden city from someone claiming to be the owner. I found out the property had been forclosed on and I went to court with what I thought was a bona fide lease agreement only to find that the man I thought was the owner truly was not and my lease worthless. All I have is my worthless lease a couple rent receipts signed by the fake owner and his name and phone number.
