Moving to DC, no car, rent must be under $1500. Neighborhood suggestions?

Early 30s, single, relocating to DC from Boston for job. Don't konw too many people down here, so looking for a friendly neighborhood with grocery stores, restauarnts, coffee shop, everything. No car, so must be pub trans friendly or within walking distance to the downtown area.

I'd like to stay away from studios and would like to stay around $1500, could go higher if there is a great place. Thinking of renting for a year and then buying, so it would be nice if I could get to know a neighborhood where I could get into the market for around $350k too. Thanks in advance

There are a bunch of neighborhoods that you can get a pretty nice house in that range. I like Dupont Circle alot, though you would have to take the metro for a few stops. There's also Logan Circle right next to dupont(though logan circle feeds off of Dupont's metro). They seem to be a little bit less college-y for the most part, but still plenty of restaurants and great nightlife. Other than that, there's Georgetown, but it was too much of a pain to walk to foggy bottom metro every day for me.

Lots of people live on Captiol Hill, but I felt old living there due to the intern population at all of the bars. Granted, lots of people our age live there, I guess I just didn't find them. You can definitely get more bang ofr your buck in Capitol Hill.

Stay away from Adams Morgan if you like to take it easy on a friday or saturday, unless you are far off of 18th street. Foggy Bottom has a lot of GW undergrads, too. There's always Arlintgon if you are looking for a little bit more room to spread out and don't mind a longer commute

Hi - I actually live in DC right now. I don't agree with some of the comments. For instance, Dupont is beautiful, but you won't get much for $1500 there - maybe a 1bd/studio & you certainly won't be able to buy anything there for 300k (unless you're comfortable with a small 1 bd/studio condo with HOA's). I pay $1300 for a really great 2 bd/1b in the Columbia Heights/Petworth area - with gated parking (which is unheard of!). It is an "English basement" in a rowhouse. I live within walking distance to 2 metros & am near restaurants, cafes, etc. In fact, Petworth is prob the last reminaing neighborhood in DC where you can still buy an actual rowhouse for 300k. I am moving to LA in September and can tell you more about my apt, if you are interested. Good luck! - Angela

I 2nd dupont, though I think you would be surprised/a bit disappointed for what you will get for $1500 there. Apartments in Logan Circle can also use Mt. Vernon and McPherson Sq metros, depending on where you are in Logan Circle.

Here's a link to our 1 bedroom search under $1700 in DC:

I highlighted the metro stations so you can see how close they are to public transportation and work.

u'd be surprised by what you get in nova. It's close enough to the city that you are basically living there, but much quieter and better grocery stores. Check out Ballston

Check out the Eleanor Apartments. Walking distance to buses and metro. Very affordable and well within your price range. You cannot beat the space available.
