If my off campus housing lease ends on July 31, when should I begin my search for a new place?

This was my first year in Chicago and I lived downtown but, I'm looking to move north to Lakeview/Lincoln Park area. I've started to look at places on Hotpads, but when is a realistic time my roommates and I should start the search? When should we start checking places out and contacting people? thank you for any response

I would start looking about two months out. There are many people who list through the MLS (multiple listing service) that rent out investment condos, or rent if they cannot sell. These listings, only licensed brokers have access to. Often these properties are less expensive too because people are only trying to cover their mortgage. I would be happy to send you some of these properties when you are ready (and some of the time it will say in the MLS available May 01 or August 1, etc.).

Valerie,

I will be moving to Chicago August 1st. Could you please send me some of the properties you know you may have available at this time. We would like to rent in the Lincoln Park area. Thanks

At least a month and a half prior. If you look too soon, there is no guarantee that the apartment will still be available when you are ready to finally move. Have you found anything yet?

Hi Travis. As a landlord and realtor, typically you can start looking about 2 months in advance. Be sure to verify when the apartment is available - and before you start scheduling appointments confirm again with the landlord especially if the unit is currently vacant, that they are willing to accept an applicant with a start lease date of 2 months away. Best of luck in your search and if you need a realtor - keep me in mind! My services would not cost you a thing.
